This theory will provide you with the grounding and base knowledge that will assist with your flying as you progress through to becoming a commercial pilot.

The Commercial courses cover all 7 theory subjects required for the Commercial Helicopter Licence which include:

  • Human Factors
  • Meteorology
  • Air Law
  • Navigation
  • Aerodynamics
  • Aircraft General Knowledge
  • Operations Performance and Planning

Private Theory Training

The 7 PPL theory subjects are combined in to 1 exam of approx. 3Hrs.

Exam includes the subjects – Air Law, Aerodynamics, Navigation, Meteorology, Human Factors and Radio topics.

This exam can be sat at any time during your training however to get the most out of your lessons we suggest getting this done after around 10hrs of flight time.

How to get it done!

The 3 most popular ways to get your theory done are as follows:

1. Attending our Ground school

2. Private Tuition

3. Self Study

1. Attending our Ground school

A full time ground theory course is our recommended option for both Private and Commercial. It will be the fastest way to get through all the required material and provides you a great opportunity to interact with other students, build your aviation network and to pick the brains of our experienced instructors.

We will be able to guide you through the syllabus and apply real world scenarios to your training as we go. You will also have access to our hangar as you train, so you can physically see and touch the items discussed in theory. Our full time theory course is the best way to get all your exams finished and out of the way so you can proceed with your flying without any delays!

Subject lengths are as follows:

  • Human Factors – 5 Classrooms days
  • Meteorology – 8 Classrooms days
  • Air Law – 7 Classrooms days
  • Navigation – 10 Classrooms days
  • Aerodynamics – 5 Classrooms days
  • Aircraft General Knowledge – 5 Classrooms days
  • Operations Performance and Planning – 10 Classrooms days
  • Private Pilot Licence – 10 Classrooms days

How does ground school work?

The full theory course for the Private exam takes 10 days to complete.

The full course for the commercial takes around 3 months to complete the full 7 subjects.

While the course is running classes are Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm, students will be expected to attend all classes and there will be study material and/or practice questions for each evening. The courses are designed as an intensive study period and students will be required to put in the necessary work both during and after the classes.

Classes will take place in HV Helicopters flight school at Cessnock Airport.

Private theory exams are conducted in house here at HV Helicopters

Commercial theory exams will be at the CASA exam centre, just down the road at Cessnock TAFE.

Struggle to get 3 months off?

That’s fine, you can just attend 1 subject at a time. There is now set order which you must complete these subjects and you can balance this with your time available. if you prefer to do a combination of self study and classroom (full time) study we can provide that too; the choice is yours!

2. Private Tuition

For those needing a helping hand we also offer one on one private tuition. This can be tailored around your specific needs, maybe it’s just to get you over that hump or maybe it’s to get it done on your time schedule, whatever the reason just get in contact and we will help you make a plan.

3. Self Study

We can provide you with a great set of good quality study notes with practice exams and all you will need to get the theory done. This is a good option for those that do not have the time or ability to attend a ground school theory course. It provides you the option to study when you want and where you want, however BEWARE you need to be self disciplined enough to actually study!

Although the majority of people do not have trouble with the general content of the theory, there is a lot of material to cover and we recommend you be prepared to commit a reasonable amount of time to it.
